Spain won the World Cup on Sunday, one-nil, in New Jersey, completing football's long journey from Maracanã to a venue best known for being near an outlet mall. Argentina attempted nothing on goal until extra time, a patience-based strategy familiar to anyone who has watched a brand wait for organic to kick in.

Canada is on fire. Not a fire. Nine hundred fires, coordinated across eight provinces like a franchise rollout, exporting enough smoke that New York spent Tuesday lit like the inside of a Victorian lung.

But the week belonged to a bowl in Ohio.

Taco Bell, an institution whose customers have signed a waiver in their hearts, has been felled by a parasite in its shredded iceberg lettuce. Sixteen hundred cases. Five states. Consider what survived scrutiny here. The beef, which is beef the way a tribute band is Fleetwood Mac, walked free. The cheese, dispensed from what one assumes is a caulking gun, walked free. The sauce named Diablo, an actual printed warning, walked free. The arrest was made at the lettuce. The designated driver. The ingredient added so the bowl could be photographed for the menu without a priest present.

Taco Bell was Yum's growth engine, running eight percent same-store comps, until one farm in central Mexico ended the discussion. Nobody at head office had ever said the word "lettuce" in a meeting. There was no lettuce strategy. There was no lettuce owner. It was simply there, being green, holding no one's attention and everyone's exposure.

Every operation has one of these. The unglamorous default nobody has looked at since it was set up, faithfully doing its job right up until the job becomes a federal traceback. Yours is not lettuce. It is a shipping rule, a supplier, a flow that has run untouched since 2023.

The CDC found Taco Bell's. You get to find yours first, which is the entire advantage on offer this week.

Scaling from $0 to $100K in 8 Weeks | Facebook Ads Case Study

Every brand now claims to have a "human in the loop" reviewing its AI content, which is a comforting phrase until you ask what the human is actually doing in there.

The honest answer, in most cases, is reading the draft once, removing an em dash or two, deciding it feels fine, and hitting publish. This is not editing. This is a vibe check wearing editing's coat, and it is currently costing brands more than any of them realize.

This piece is useful because it names the slow, specific way that adds up.

  • The three symptoms of what's being called brand drift, and how a voice goes from distinctly yours to generically forgettable one AI draft at a time

  • Why chasing AI search visibility by writing "for the robots" produces the exact opposite of what gets a brand cited

  • The six-question audit that separates real editing from a glance and a shrug, none of which involve checking grammar

  • What happens to a brand voice that lives entirely in one exhausted person's head, and why that arrangement was always going to end badly

Not glamorous. Commercially relevant, and increasingly expensive to ignore.

How to think about Meta ad testing in 2026.

Most brands set up testing with the wrong goal. They think the job is to spend as much as possible to find winners. The actual job is the opposite: spend as LITTLE as possible to find winners.

Two levers matter, minimize spend per test and maximize win rate (the % of ads you launch that actually become winners).

Four ways to structure testing, each with a real trade-off:

  • What if your popup adapted to every site visitor? Alia is an AI powered popup that personalizes experiences in real time. It tests, learns, and adapts to show each visitor what’s most likely to convert, so you turn more traffic into subscribers and revenue. Stop wasting clicks. Start converting them. • Scaling paid media shouldn’t feel like gambling. Sum Digital helps 7–9-figure ecommerce brands turn ad spend into predictable, profitable growth across Meta, Google, and TikTok—without bloated teams or black-box reporting. Senior operators only, creative that actually converts, and a relentless focus on ROAS. If you’re done paying for spend instead of results, Sum Digital is your agency of record.

  • Still on Klaviyo? This one’s for the Omnisend-curious. Omnisend’s new on-demand webinar in now live, walking DTC brands through how it stacks up against Klaviyo… and what it actually takes to migrate. Deniz, Omnisend’s Senior Onboarding & Migrations Manager, covers feature differences, pricing, SMS, support, common pain points, and the step-by-step migration process, from lists and segments to automations, deliverability, and onboarding support. Stat Attack

That is the week. Spain has its trophy, Canada (and America) has its smoke, and somewhere in your stack a very green, very boring default is doing its job unsupervised. Go and look at it. Ask it questions like, "Are you capable of associating Taco Bell with diarrhea in a way it somehow was not already?"

That is the calibre of failure available to a boring default left alone long enough. Do not wait for the traceback.
